Why “Diesel Bug” is on the Rise (and How to Prevent It)

If you’ve noticed more “sludge” in your filters lately, you’re not alone. The shift towards higher FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) content in modern diesel has made fuel more “hygroscopic” – meaning it pulls moisture directly from the air.

This moisture creates the perfect breeding ground for the “Diesel Bug.” Once these microbes establish a colony, they produce waste products that are acidic, leading to tank corrosion and thick, black slime that halts operations.

How to fight back:

  1. Extraction: Use a Dirty Fuel Extraction System to remove the water and sludge sitting at the bottom of your tank.
  1. Filtration: Run the remaining fuel through a polishing system to remove suspended particulates.
  1. Prevention: Implement a regular testing and polishing schedule to ensure the bug never gets a foothold.
